When Manuel* first joined SGA’s workforce development program, he was apprehensive and uncertain about his future. Life on the streets had taught him how to survive, and change felt risky. He doubted that case management or workforce training could meet his needs as quickly as the streets once had.
At the time, Manuel was justice-involved and had no prior work experience or clear path back to school. What he did know was that he was tired—tired of running from the police and tired of living in survival mode. He wanted something different but didn’t yet know how to get there.
Through one-on-one mentoring and a holistic support plan, SGA staff helped Manuel identify his goals and uncover strengths he didn’t realize he had. Although he initially believed it was too late to turn his life around, consistent guidance and encouragement helped him see the many opportunities available through the program. Over time, Manuel learned to silence his inner doubts, stay focused on his personal and professional growth, and take ownership of his future.
Manuel became actively involved in setting short- and long-term goals, developing a career plan, and building his independence. During his worksite experience, he discovered a natural talent for customer service and team leadership. He excelled in his job readiness and hands-on training, gaining valuable insight into workplace expectations, communication, and collaboration.
Today, Manuel is thriving, working for a marketing firm. He manages his own team and mentors others to reach their potential, gain the confidence, skills, and mindset to build their own paths to success.
